Mother's Day weekend

Mother's Day weekend started off with Mother's Day Bingo at the school with Ashton. Kaden enjoyed snack mix and cookies while Ashton and I played. Ashton won a little teddy bear wearing a sweater that says, "I love chocolate". She later gave the bear to Nana. After bingo Kaden and I headed for Hanover. Kaden fell asleep on the way there so I parked the van in the parking lot of AC Moore, leaned back my seat and closed my eyes too! Just before noon we shopped a little at AC Moore, after using their bathrooms, then headed over to KFC to meet Dale for lunch. We both wanted to try their new grilled chicken. It's pretty good! We ended our meal together at Bruster's where I had a coupon for a free ice cream cone. The person waiting on us offered a free cone for Kaden too! Sweet!

Ashton had another game.

Sunday afternoon I traveled with my Dad and brother Dave to visit Mom at the York Hospital. Ashton went along too. Dad and I had been talking back and forth for nearly two weeks on what to get Mom. She can only move her one arm, and that's limited, making it difficult to hold a book to read. She has lost interest in reading anyway and also in watching television. Her appetite is just about gone. The doctor told Dad she isn't taking in enough nutrients. Mom loves fresh fruit so I thought Dad's idea of a fresh juicy plum was a good one! He cut it up and fed it to her, although she could only eat half. Dave brought Mom flowers, Mike gave her a framed picture of his son graduating from pre-school and I gave her a homemade book with scriptures and family pictures. I did a little shopping for Dad the day before. I found a hummingbird (Mom's favorite) that perches over a vase or flower pot, which I put on the vase of flowers someone had given her. I also found a picture book of photographs by Anne Geddes. Mom seemed to enjoy the adorable pictures of babies dressed up in garden themes -- plants, insects, fruits, vegetables, etc. (Not much reading involved.) Dad pointed out that all four of Mom's children were in to see her on Mother's Day.

Mom was in a lot of pain while we were in, but still managed to joke with her nurse!

Finally finished those pain-in-the-butt science projects over the weekend! Glad they are done! Handed them in today -- two days early!
Dale had taken me out to eat Saturday night. We went to Perkin's. Dottie, they have really good onion rings!! Dale and I each had the chef's salad and a slice of pie for dessert! Good meal!
At church on Sunday each sister was handed a single carnation. Let me be honest on how I feel about that -- LAME! Come on Priesthood brethren, you can do better than that! I made sure to let those in charge know that next year the sisters want chocolate! I was not the only one to voice this opinion! LOL!
I received a handmade game from Avery, a coupon book from Bryson, a paper purse from Kenzie with .50 cents and the promise of a nice long back scratch session in the near future! Kassie and Ashton both have gifts still in the works, or so they say. Nothing from Brady, although I have a suggestion. How about a day without tormenting your younger brothers and sisters? Now there's a Mother's Day gift!

Gwenda, I've been following your blog for months now. Ever since you gave it to me at Christmas time. I just had to comment on the flower for Mothers' day. Yuck!! My flower broke at the neck within an hour. I would certainly rather have a chocolate bar! Chocolate would make me happy. We used to get flowers in the York ward too. I finally suggested to the Bishop that he give chocolate and guess what? He did! But now I'm not there to get it and I got a flower again. I can't win!

So they are back to carnations huh? Well, our ward gave every woman, aged 12 and up, a KING size chocolate bar. And I can't eat it. :-( I gave mine to Sean.

At our church, it is a very welcome tradition to receive a carnation on Mother's Day. Perhaps you do not know the story behind the Mother's Day Carnation. Mother's day was invented by a woman, Anna Jarvis. Anna's mother's favorite flower was the white carnation. This flower was chosen to represent the sweetness, purity and endurance of motherly love. In more recent times however, the red carnation has become the symbol of a living mother while white signifies that one's mother has passed. We offer our church ladies a colorful array of carnations to choose from...the white carnation being the most popular.

Hey Angie! No, never heard that story, and I'm sure our Priesthood Brethren never have either! That's not why we received carnations. If it were, then it would be more meaningful, although I would still prefer chocolate! LOL! Gwenda
